From The Tanooki Bored
The Tanooki Bored (the preferred spelling; other acceptable spellings: The Tanooki Board, or, for short, TTB) is an internet quaintmunity originally founded in 2001 on the video game website gamers.com by MPMike (née Michael Gathwright) out of sheer boredom.
Hence, the name.
TTB's first (and possibly finest) moment was at Gamers. Gamers-era Tanooki laid the groundwork for things to come. When other Gamers boards made the move to a new website, Tanooki eventually followed suit (no pun intended). At this time, the Bored is stationed at the popular video gaming website 1up; however, TTB moderator Slurpee plans to have a new website up and ready just for the Tanooki by early 2006.
[edit] What Is A Tanooki?
In Japanese myth, the tanuki (kanji: 狸, phonetic: たぬき) is a "raccoon dog" known for being mischievious. However, the creature is more popularly known in the western world for its appearance in Super Mario Bros. 3. It should be noted that the spelling "Tanooki" was probably used popularly because it is more appeasable in English phonetics. In the game, the tanooki appears as a special suit Mario can wear. The suit allows Mario to sprout raccoon-like features and fly. In addition, if the player presses Down and B (sometimes written "Down+B") on their controller, Mario turns into a statue, becomes invincible for a short time, and can stomp and defeat enemies in one fell swoop.
[edit] The Tanooki Philosophy
The TTB philosophy is simple: to always touch, feel, and love the Tanooki. The banner atop the Bored features this sentiment as a friendly reminder to newcomers and veterans alike.
